Which Toothpaste Is Right for You?

Bradenton, Florida dentist Dr. Tiffany Boyd loves it when her patients ask questions. If you are looking for answers, that means that you are thinking about your teeth and your oral health. And that is definitely a good thing!

One of the most common questions we get asked here at Braden River Dental in Bradenton is, “What toothpaste should I use?”.

First of all, you should know that there is no single right answer. As long as you use a toothpaste with sufficient fluoride, you are making a good choice.

Toothpaste Choices

When it comes to picking a toothpaste, it’s easy to understand why you might be a little unsure. It’s not just a question of competing brands. Some of the toothpaste on the shelves comes with claims to be good for your gums, others offer to help rebuild the enamel on your teeth. If you have sensitivity to hot and cold, you easily find a toothpaste that can help.

And just about everybody wants a toothpaste that can give them a dazzlingly white smile.

So, which of the claims are backed by sound science? And, perhaps, more importantly, what do you need or want your toothpaste to do?

Nathan Janowicz, DMD, of the Cleveland Clinic, shared some tips how to choose the best toothpaste. “For the best protection, find a toothpaste with at least 1,000 parts per million fluoride and the American Dental Association stamp of approval,” he says. “Everything else is a matter of personal preference.”

Have you been tempted by marketing touting the ability of a toothpaste to restore your tooth’s enamel? You may not need it. “As long as it is fluoridated toothpaste, the toothpaste will help restore enamel that has not yet decayed,” Dr. Janowicz says. “Once decay is present, though, all bets are off.”

If you have questions about the toothpaste you are using, contact Dr. Tiffany Boyd, one of the most approachable dentists in Bradenton, FL!
